Niello (Tula) (lat. Nigellus = blackish)
An ornamental technique in goldsmithing, which has been known since ancient times, in which dark heavy metal sulphides or their alloys are applied as a color contrast to an engraved, chiselled, etched or with metal bars provided carrier metal (gold, silver, copper, bronze, brass, nickel silver, nicke alloy or steel) are applied and melted. Subsequently, the superfluous Niello is sanded off and the surface is polished smoothly. This activity is called niellieren. Niello was popular in the end of the 19th century during the art nouveau and art deco and was used for the design of pocket watch cases.
